I find the flatware of the Sixties and Seventies so much more interesting than the current offerings. Of course there are fabulous, modern designs being made today, especially in the higher price ranges.
But the mid-priced stuff, like what you would get at Target or Ikea or CB2, for example, bores me. It’s either super sleek and modern (but boring) or very traditional (yawn).
Here are some examples of flatware patterns that were moderately priced, yet they were interesting, whimsical even, and perfectly represented the aesthetic of their time.
Flatware is hard to find in sets at thrift stores, although sometimes you’ll see one if you happen in at the right moment. Knives are by far the most plentiful single pieces, not sure why. Once in a while I’ll buy just a single knife, for a quarter, just to have it, study the design, etc.
The two rightmost ones are my favorites; the one in the middle is from my actual flatware set in Baltimore, which I bought on eBay after getting tired of trying to assemble a set of flatware myself.
